    employment

The good news is that Alachua County has a very low unemployment rate.  The bad news is that, in average, people in Alachua County aren't earning the kinds of wages that a community with our resources should be able to provide.

On the above graph, with the State of Florida represented in red and Alachua County Represented in Blue, you can see the the number of people employed by private business and self-employed is well below the state average, but the number of people employed by government is well above the state average.

Why is this a problem?  Government employment can provide stability, but it does not provide vitality and economic expansion.

Government employment in and of itself is not bad, but a lack of wealth creating private business is.
